Waste and Wastewater

Greenhouse Gas Emissions:

The waste sector is responsible for 11% of the total national greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (2011). Waste sector, including wastewater, is the largest source of CH4 emissions in Lebanon, accounting for 87.5% of the total national CH4 emissions. Solid waste disposal on land remains the highest emitting category, constituting 94.3% of waste emissions. More details available in the Second National Communication report and the National Greenhouse Gas Inventory Report and Mitigation Analysis for the Waste Sector in Lebanon.

Mitigation Actions:

1.56 million tonnes of municipal solid waste are generated in Lebanon every year
The mitigation potential from the waste sector focuses mainly on solid waste management which accounts for the majority of emissions of the sector. The implementation of the 2006 national solid waste management plan, which consists of establishing regional sanitary landfills, sorting and composting facilities while rehabilitating existing dumpsites can significantly reduce related emissions.
