Clean Development Mechanism

The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is one of the flexible mechanisms established under the Kyoto Protocol that “allows a country with an emission-reduction target or emission-limitation commitment to implement an emission-reduction project in developing countries. Such projects can earn saleable Certified Emission Reduction (CER) credits, each equivalent to one tonne of CO2, which can be counted towards meeting Kyoto targets” (UNFCCC, 2013). CERs issued for each CDM project can be traded in the carbon market at a price set by supply and demand.

CDM

Seven CDM projects have been approved for Lebanon, saving up to 91,721 tonnes of CO2eq every year
CDM projects, which should be in-line with each developing country’s sustainable development objectives and should result in a reduction or removal of GHG emissions, include activities related to energy efficiency, renewable energy, industrial processes, agriculture, forestry and waste, thereby generating tradable emission credits. CDM projects should also prove additionality i.e. the reduction of GHG emissions would not have occurred if the proposed project is not to be implemented.

CDM in Lebanon

The Ministry of Environment (MoE) has been appointed as the Designated National Authority (DNA) for CDM projects in 2006 and seven projects have been approved by the CDM Executive Board generating a total of 91,721 CERs every year.
